What's actually involved

Color-changing hardwood is a full refinish project — you can't just paint stain over existing finish. The process: (1) sand to bare wood through multiple grit stages to open the pores, (2) water-pop or condition the wood for even stain absorption, (3) apply the stain in your chosen color (sometimes 2 coats for deep tones), (4) apply 3 coats of polyurethane with screening between coats.
